(TCH) Walking in Their Shoes: Understanding the Older Adult in the Community

Abstract: One in six Americans are over the age of 65; by 2030 this number is projected to be one in five. Adults over the age of 65 are the fastest growing segment of the population. The challenge for nurses is to identify older adults’ strengths and assist them to maximize their independence, promote healthy aging, support the mental health of the older adult, provide health promotion and disease prevention. To facilitate this understanding in our baccalaureate nursing students, as part of their Nursing Care of the Older Adult course, students complete a six-part older adult in the community project. In this project, students spend at least 15 hours with an older adult completing geriatric assessment tools, a home safety evaluation, develop a reminiscence e-photobook, evaluate medications, help the older adult develop a 72-hour disaster kit and then summarize all of their findings in a concept map and reflect on how the experience has shaped their view of older adults.

Dr. Jennifer Yeager

Dr. Jennifer Yeager has taught at TSU for over 15 years. Her area of expertise is care of the older adult and comes from 10 years as a Nurse Practitioner in long-term care and house calls. She is the editor of Gerontologic Nursing, now in its 6th edition.
