(FSD) Experiences from a Transdisciplinary Collaboration: Preparing the "Socio-Environmental Landscape Connectivity within Rural Communal Conservation Areas in Zimbabwe"

Abstract: based on an NSF RFP, four Tarleton faculty worked on a proposal that required a multidisciplinary effort. The proposal was completed by faculty members from wildlife and natural resources, environmental sociology, intercultural communication, and environmental history. We also worked with another university, Great Zimbabwe University and at least two researchers at that university to develop and carry out the research. We learned that interdisciplinary research provides a stronger approach important in competitive grant funding spaces. We share here our experiences writing and collaborating across disciplines and with an international university. These experiences include how we came together, the limitations and benefits of putting together this proposal, and what we have learned about the process: collaborative writing, understanding the system here at Tarleton, and how we move forward. The presentation will focus on how each faculty member contributed to the proposal: Specialty focus Research methods and contribution to collaborative writing We will leave parting information for the university system to foster these types of collaborations and improve the research environment here at Tarleton.

	Dr. Therese Pennell Therese I. Pennell is an assistant professor in the English and Languages Department. She teaches technical writing, her research focus includes intercultural communication, intercultural rhetoric, online pedagogy, and distance learning.
	Dr. Robert Lee Cavazos, Robert Lee Cavazos’ is an Environmental Sociologist, in which he examines environmental injustice issues, food justice, water scarcity, urban studies, and race/inequality issues. His current research focuses on water scarcity issues within the Ogallala Aquifer and the effects agriculture and urban growth have impacted water extraction.
	Dr. Paul Banda Dr. Banda is an Assistant Professor of History, in the Department of History, Geography/GIS (HSGG). He teaches courses in World Civilizations, The British Empire, Modern Africa, and the global Cold War.
	Dr. Darrel B. Murray Dr. Darrel B. Murray is an assistant professor in the Wildlife and Natural Resources Department. He teaches plant diversity and ecological restoration. His research focuses on restoration of savanna and grassland ecosystems.
