Abstract: This panel will share the ways faculty and staff can collaboratively work to identify and advocate against procedural and systemic barriers that impact Black student success, particularly first-generation Black student success. We will identify themes that are seen in our various student advocacy roles, share the impact of policies and practices on students, explain how segmented views of processes can lead to compounded barriers, and connect with attendees to enhance the opportunities for student success. With a critical eye on processes, we hope to challenge the status quo and motivate our audience members to use their roles to go beyond the barriers.

Dr. Ebony Lang

Dr. Ebony Lang is an Associate Professor in Social Work. She serves as the Black Student Union Faculty Advisor and the Student Social Work Association Faculty Advisor. Her research emphasizes community organizing, professional competency, and spirituality

Dr. Lora Helvie-Mason

Dr. Lora Helvie-Mason is a Professor in Communication Studies. She has worked with student basic needs challenges for over two decades including campus pantries, retention programs, and inclusion initiatives. She researches communication as a tool for historically marginalized populations to navigate the culture of higher education.

Lathes Towns

Lathes Towns is the Director of the Lance Zimmerman Department for Student Involvement and Family Relations. She fosters inclusive programming and engagement opportunities for students. She is the recipient of the 2021 Texas A&M Chancellor’s Medallion for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
